Tyre Help Needed

hi there i am getting milage of about 10-12000 miles out of my front tyres and now they need replacing, i know i need reinforced but getting fed up replacing every year, any brands and possible milage that you peoples are getting would be appreciated before i spend my cash

Mine are 15" wheels M, yours are 16" I think, they are wider too, so your tyres will cost more.

Yes i have 16 inch ones....how can an inch make all that difference???

Market forces! 15" is less fashionable.

 

(I would imagine that wider tyres are more expensive to make.)

The overall diameter will still be the same. Smaller wheels will have a bigger sidewall depth.

 

There was a recent post where someone explained the width/ratio, etc. Very good post - ought to go in the FAQ. Now where was it...

I can't find that tyre explaination, so here goes...

 

E.G. 215/55 R16 V

 

The 215 is the width in mm.

The 55 is sidewall height as a percentage of the width.

R means Radial (how the tyre is constructed)

16 is the wheel diameter in inches.

V is the speed rating.

 

215/55 R16 and 225/45 R17 have nearly the same overall diameter, but the 17" are bigger wheels.

Hmmm...could i put 17 inch ones on then????and if i did..what would the impact be on the whole..i.e.....speed..holding capability round corners at speed.. and general hold on the road?Obviously bigger wheels = bigger turning circle...but would bigger wheels affect the driving in any way that is detrimental to the car?

I'm thinking about it. When my tyres wear out, I might buy 17" aftermarket alloys.

 

As you can fit slightly wider tyres to the Galaxy, if you go for the 225's the grip will be better. (However, I don't want *too much* grip with such a tall vehicle) I suspect the biggest downside to the smaller sidewall height will be a harder ride.

 

The best thing I did to my old Audi estate was swap the tyres from 195/60 to 205/55. Much more grip. As I didn't change the wheels, the ride was unaffected.

It is a big car and has quite high wheel-arches too. If you want the arches to look fuller then you have to lower the car using lowering springs and dampers. Trouble then is the change in geometry can destroy tyres on a car that already eats them for breakfast lunch and dinner...

 

17s are very expensive and you would need new wheels too.

Yes. You'll note that I got it wrong when I said 225/45. However, 225/45 R17 have been fitted to Mk2 Galaxys, according to the manual.

 

However, the chart makes this a different diameter (634mm instead of 642mm).

It would be interesting to know what load index is specified for this size, generally the reinforced tyres of this size are 94 load index. I thought the minimum specified by Ford for Galaxys was 95 - I know 93 is definitely no good, but there aren't any 94 rated in the more common Galaxy sizes, so perhaps 94 rated just covers the weight.

 

My cheap tyre experiment from mytyres is going well, I'm very happy with the Fortunas so far... ;)

Load index is 94 for those. Full text (from the Manual) is:

 

225/45 R17 94 rf. 41/38 psi and 44/50 psi (same pressures as the 215/55 R16 95 rf.)

Hi all,

 

Just to add my sixpeneth....... I've been looking around for a while now for new front tyres on the Gal. Read all the threads on here as to what was recommended and prices paid etc. Checked out 'mytyres.com' and aslo this site http://www.tyretest.com/pkw_sommerreifen/index.html which i found very interesting.

 

I finally changed my old (well they wouldn't be new, would they?) Dunlop 2020's a couple of weeks ago, and good ridance to them. They managed about 18,000 very noisy miles...! I was told by the tyre peeps that i did well making them last that long.

 

Anyway, saw an ad in the local rag for "Tyreland" (i think they're national but not sure), rang 'em up and said what have you got. When i came too in A&E they said...... "you just been quoted for tyres mate.."? (ok, that bit was a joke...... :D ) I said "HOW MUCH...." just goes to show the last time i bought tyres. He goes on to say "how about an economy tyre instead..."? mmmmmmhh, thinks i, dont normally like to do cheap when black round things are concerned.... however, what are you offering? i enquire. "No dont laugh" he says, "but a make called 'Linlong'... and they're W rated too". Asked if his pc on the desk was linked to the internet, said could i do a quick search using the above named web site. Help yourself says he, and found this.....

I got 26k out of the Dunlops on my Mk2 Ghia - you are right they are noisy and I would love to change them but I don't want to mix tyres on the car as the rears are fine - if the bloody things would all wear out evenly that would make it an easier decision to change. :D

 

As for affordability - Just save a couple fo quid a week in a jar or something and at the end of your 18 or 26k you should have enough to buy the tyres you want. ;)
